I don't know enough about baseball to bring up specifics, but have salary caps ever been introduced/talked about?

Also, how do you two feel about it? Would this give the AL/NL more of an even distribution as to who can spend what to become good/get good players?

I'm actually curious, cause it seemed to shake up the NHL in a positive fashion, perhaps the AL/NL could benefit in a similar way?

Cheers!

There is a luxury tax which a team has to pay if they go over X amount of dollars on salary. The yankees go over it every year, I think Boston has once.

I'd like to see a salary cap but the system is so broken right now, it would be hard to put in place. For example, the florida marlins payroll is like 20 million, the yankees payroll is 200 million with 5-7 year contracts on players. Many players make 25 million dollars. MLB would have to say they are implementing it 7 years before, otherwise some teams would be crippled by these monster conracts.

BJ the problem is that owners dont put money back into teams to get players....

Say the yankees pay 20 mill in luxury taxes, the owners are supposed to reinvest it into their teams (whoever receives it) but instead they pocket the money so their teams and fans suffer... plus biop is a toronto fan who is deprived of a real sports team so we all feel bad for him..

btw biop boston has paid a luxury tax like the yankees every year but one

Ya but iCe, if a cap is put in place, wouldn't that "fix" that problem, because it would void the necessity for a luxury tax? For example, "The limit is $100 million/team, you cannot go over it, PERIOD." No?

why should owners benefit so much if players are paid less.. not like ticket prices or beer going down...its dumb look at the nba if they have a lockout the top 5 people in nba can start their own league no players= no game

NBA has a salary cap.

yes but are worried about a lockout... players are not happy... without the players league is shit. It will not happen but people like Jordan Kobe Lebron Wade Anthony Pierce Nowitzki could start a new league and take all players with them... owners started all this yes but they have gotten tooo greedy. I think greed is good (gordon gecko) but you cant be too greedy and teams in baseball like Pitts Jays Royals Twins Oriles could spend money on players instead of pocketing cash

See i think the problem, then, may be the fact that owner's collect the luxury tax paid by an offending team. I don't know why this is, shouldn't the league collect this tax??? If i've got this correct, then i think that is step one.

Teams collect the taxes and are "supposed" to reinvest it into spending money on "talent" or better players but owners pocket it as a bonus. If they spent the money on better talent they would bring in more fans and in turn make more money but they are greedy

iCe, the yankees make a gazillion more dollars than any other team in the league. That is the sole purpose of the salary cap in the nhl and nba, so that small market teams can still compete. I agree with you that owners should reinvest in the team, but the problem is the yankees have much more money to reinvest. That's why salary caps benefit the whole league. It is a very selfless thing that the yankees owners are doing, and I respect it, but its not good for the game.

Hahahah ice wtf you talking about the players could start their own league. You are a finance major and this makes sense to you? Obviously the owners wouldn't let them use their stadiums, the tv contracts go thru the league. Ok so all the good players start their own league, they don't get paid, have no place to play, and are not broadcasted on tv, sounds like a winning strategy to me. Oh and finish your damn game in the biop open!

First of all, how is money made through stadiums and tv?

Bands/Artist/DJ's make most of their money on concerts not album sales...

Fans go to see players and could they start their own league yea what is gonna happen to the stadiums if no revenue owners would forclose on them... They could play in college/seperate arenas...

BTW I spoke with remy i have been overburdened at work, if i cannot come on tonight i forfeit i told him, dont worry i will not ruin your gay tourney

Ticket sales, merchandise, tv contracts equal money, which are all owned by the league. You are right, people go to see the players, but you need a venue and a league. Who has the funds to support all these things? Owners with hundreds of millions of dollars. Most of which own companies. You are telling me the players can walk away and start their own league? Why don't they? If it was that easy why wouldn't they do it and keep all the revenue for themselves rather than signing contracts? Because it won't work.

They dont do it because its easier to be a puppet.. Comon guy.. Jordan alone is work close to a billion, let alone throwing the top 10 players now into the mix. Money is easy to come by to endorse something like this. Only point in bringing that shitty sport of basketball into this was the problem they are having with a possible lockout just like football... but basketball players make a lot more than football

Ok jordans worth a billion. A franchise sells for 100-300 mil. Sweet he can run a 5 team league. That would be fun to watch. Do you realize he would then be an owner signing players to contracts???? Wow this has come full circle!

Cmon have another go ice, I could do this all day, I'm on the clock until 5!

It was a sceario you are reading to much into I said its possible it would never happen tho. Get off the basketball you fag no one watches that shit...

You say the yankees are a billion dollar franchise because of sales... YES BECAUSE THEY WIN!!! Yankee hat is the most popular (selling) hat around the world... So they reinvest money into the team. Other teams have started learning look at the nationals they are spending everything they can in a division that is hopeless, and they are marketing great with strasburg having nearly double the attendance..

reinvest instead of pocketing = WIN!

No other way to look at it ... Salary cap = fail... Beer and ticket prices will go up or stay the same even with a salary cap so no need to change it.

My point of reading into to it was that it is easy to say things that make no sense in order to try to make a point, doesn't mean they are right.

Going back to square one here iCe? Again small market teams don't have the money to reinvent. Look at tampa, they have a good team and couldn't make money, now they got stripped down. This was the exact problem in the nhl which the salary cap fixed.

My main arguement is "fuck the yankees", they are bad for baseball. Even though its the leagues fault for letting it happen.

boston mets angels phillies all have giant payrolls and the players deserve money just as much as owners...you are simply a sore loser that the blue jays suck!
