I also wanted to ask, should i be running all these scans in safemode or boot up windows normally and run them?

Or should i run them twice, once in safemode and once normally?

The best part about macs is it's super easy to pick out a game, because there are 8 of them that work on macs.

LOL!

After im done running all the scan programs ill see if its still there. If it is, well too bad for him, ill tell him he has to reformat.

When i mentioned reformatting to him, he wasnt too happy... apparently he has alot of music/pictures from vacation and shit on there.

Oh and he added that he didnt have a virus scanner/protection for about 4 months now... good job dad, good job.

If you can get into the system from safemode there's no reason he has to lose his data. Just throw them onto an external hard drive. There's a SLIGHT possibility of reinfection but it's really not that likely. I wouldn't backup any .exe's as a precaution, but def grab his images and shit.

The only problem is, i know dick all about grabbing the important stuff without making sure its infected and what not.

I came across this, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-2010, i think im gonna give this a try as well.

As far as my experience goes most viruses won't infect other shit. The evil ones will wreak havoc on the windows folder but they won't infect too much other shit. If you just grab pictures and documents you'll be safe. You can run antivirus on them after you get reformatted just for shits. Having an infected file on your system means nothing unless it's run by something. (Ex. an infected virus.exe on your system means nothing unless you double click on it or something else on your system calls it)

See, i dont know if my dad clicked on anything. He thought virus scanner that was popping up was his until i told him THATS the actual virus itself. His reply &quot:oh.."

Well, yeah, but I'm talking about after you reformat. Just copy whatever you want over to an external drive, reformat, reinstall and run antivirus on the external before trying to access any of the backed up files.

definitely don't just erase your dads personal files, if windows is really fucked up, download ubuntu, you can run it in live mode straight off the cd, you should be able to figure out how to backup the important stuff to a usb key, or external hard drive, or burn them to dvd.

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

when you reinstall windows scan the drive before you copy his files back onto the system.

for antivirus, try Microsoft Security Essentials, its apparently about as good as it gets and it is free.

If he has access to the system from safe mode he shouldn't need to use Ubuntu live. Good to know his options though I suppose.

Honestly though SB:
Log into safe mode
Copy all important files to an external HDD/thumb drive.
Reboot to windows disk, when given the option do a fresh install (haven't done a windows install for a while, I hope there's an option for this)
If given the option between Quick and Full Format, you can do a full format for due diligence.
Once installed, download antivirus (check what DM suggested, sounds solid)
Scan the external hard drive, clean anything suspicious.
Copy files back where pappa would expect them.

Should take a couple hours max and he'll have a nice clean machine to work with. Consider maybe upgrading to Windows 7 in the process just for fun (since you're doing all the work anyways)

My parents buy Mcafee, and its basically idiot proof man. It costs like 5$ a year or something and he doesn't have to worry about all of the above.

Now that I have a steady paycheck I'm feeling the same way.

doing some googling,

if its a BIOS virus, you'll need to flash your bios and reformat

apperantly there are bios viruses that can't be flashed and require you to replace the chip all together (might as well get a new mobo)

if its a re-formating only issue, might as well pick up a fresh HD, not only will be faster but you'll also have a guarantee that nothing has been on it

plus if its for your dad's PC i'm sure a 40-50 dollar HD will more than meet his needs.

+1 buy a mac for all your horse porn needs

But I use www.spywareterminator.com <- 100% free
CCleaner (google's your friend) <- also 100% free

*Important before you start
- If there's ANY antivirus currently installed (trial, full, expired - whatever), it MUST be uninstalled first. More than one antivirus program, and they can actually inhibit eachother. I know some antivirus programs like Symmantec/Norton actually have an uninstaller program to remove the antivirus (all legit, off of their website, to prevent viruses from removing the antivirus programs) - So make sure you rid your computer of all that shit before even attempting to run spyware/ccleaner.

1 ) Boot up
2 ) Disable System Restore
3 ) Reboot into safe mode
4 ) Run full-out scans with both programs listed above
5 ) Once done, reboot
6 ) Verifiy you're good
7 ) Re-enable System Restore
8 ) Create a new Restore Point, while deleting all old ones.

Hope this helps brother, good luck.

I ended up running ccleaner, spybot, and malwarebytes antimaleware all in safemode as well as an Avast full scan.

Malwarebytes found something like 100 infected files and that seemed to get rid of it. I ran it again after i restarted and nothing popped up.

Thanks for the help peeps.

The best part about a Mac is that it's mere existence trolls fags like you that don't understand the differences. As far as gaming, if that's your primary concern don't get one. That being said, I'm a windows software developer and feel like a fish out of water on a Mac. Doesn't mean everything foreign to you is bad, just different.

/Mac discussion please, help with problem or gtfo

The best part about Macs is that all of they're users act like little girls on their first period when you insult their homosexual life style.

Glad you got somewhere with it SB, shit can get nasty :/

@ mac haters - you're just afraid of change and diversity. Having more than just a Windows machine (i.e. 2+ operating systems) in my arsenal has saved my ass countless times. ;)
