building a new system case too?
Yes, sir. I've spent the last few months nailing down a design. Once again, it'll be plexiglass, but man will it be proper. I start building that after the new year. Custom liquid-cooled, plexiglass enclosure. I'm very excite :D
Gonna take me a while, but totally worth it, I love little projects like this..

Nice. I need to start upgrading aswell. Any tips on what to get?
Ps. I have a comp from 6 years ago, so I would need everything basically. Still on a 8600gt vid card lol

might as well start voiding the warranty now by sanding the IHS down to the copper

what temp improvement u get from lapping? why does the noctua12 cooler have a textured bottom plate rather than a mirror finish ?

everyone knows ipod mini is for girls :D
Then sell your half-useful i7 and buy a real gaming chip :D

EDIT: @ Sal, I've never lapped a CPU, nor will I ever. It's absolutely useless, because the thermal grease fills any non-perfect contacts. Kids on the internet are stoopit.

ppl claim up to 10C+ improvements. apparently paste is no substitute for precision machining.

depends on how solid the contact is between the chip itself and the IHS. Apparently Ivy Bridge has been really shitty about it which is why IHS removal and lapping the top and base leads to good improvement. See here for pics of shoddy Intel workmanship.

On my old C2D I was already way past the datasheet's stated "absolute max" voltage and using a custom loop I kept tweaking through trial and error. When that was at max efficiency and I still needed more vCore there was nothing else to try but going subzero or lapping. Since you can't daily drive a PC cooled with dry ice, the choice was obvious. Lapping got me an extra 200MHz and AFAIK I have the highest validated OC out there for an E7400 on water-cooling. Call me stoopit but to me that was an awesome reason to void the warranty (unless the chip is DOA probably not gonna need that anyway) and it's a trick I definitely plan to use again.

Way too much chance work for "an extra 200mhz". I'll just continue with my plan on getting really good parts (motherboard is a big one) and achieve what I'm after..
