Advice on Laptop wipe

Planning another OS Wipe...

Question is, I really only play TF2 on this rig...should I just install Windows 7 again or should I try out Ubuntu? (Has nothing to do with the fact the promo is out, but that TF2 can now be played on it)

Thoughts?

It's really up to you. Do a bit of homework to make sure the performance would be the same, and make your mind up.. I suppose you can always just go back to Windows, should you not like it...

What's prompting the OS wipe?
I have a new localization of Windows 7, a newer install with SP1 ready to go. That and the fact that I messed with some Windows files in an attempt to change the logon background. Before that, I've been getting plagued with odd SurroCOM errors and random TF2 crashes, as well as unexplained hangups.

Reason I'm asking if I should just stick to Windows is that I hardly do anything on this laptop, I was wondering if Linux was worth giving it a shot. I already checked and besides TF2 and Steam Support, Mumble will work, probably won't need an Antivirus, and they have 'freeware' office programs. Worth it?

I'm getting the thought that Linux would perform better on this piece of shit, but I'm not sure. *Since I don't own CS:GO yet* I figured why not try it out...and yeah, I can always switch, but I like trying new things, I wonder if it's worth it however, performance and feedback wise.
buy a desktop.
Got $850 CAD I can borrow? I'd love a new Desktop or Laptop...:brains:

Install both Windows and Ubuntu (or whatever Unux distro you prefer if you'd rather not get harassed about the TF2 promotion), then make a separate partition for your data so you can access all your files and such in both operating systems.

The thing with Linux is if you want the true Linux experience you have to be willing to learn and build your system up yourself with the software you need. Ubuntu is just a bunch of pre-loaded shit to ensure that all your hardware will work but at a high cost of making it just about as bloated as Windows. There's also the issue that Linux desktop environments are far more error-prone than the Windows GUI. They might have hammered that out with the last few versions of the Unity desktop but I would still install Win 7 over Ubuntu if those were my only options, and I hate Windows 7

Going to try this out, see what happens.

Maybe, since it's a shitty laptop, I'll end up deleting a bunch of shit till I end up with a broken OS or a speedy laptop.

I'm on Linux.

Firefox works fine.
Steam works fine.
Mumble works fine.
aids works fine.
Team Fortress 2....not so fine. I get a black screen, but I can't see anything, I can touch and hear buttons as well as the start up music, but nothing else.

Help or bail?

Did you install the graphic card? Usually Linux comes with shitty standard gfx drivers, just like winblows.

I thought about it, but then the computer became incredibly laggy, just gave up and went back to Windows 7.

It's an Intel. It worked fine, up until TF2 and then the PC started lagging.
