MOTHERBOARD's (Vice's) short documentary about 3D printing guns.
Cody R Wilson has figured out how to print a semi-automatic rifle from the comfort of his own home. Now he's putting all the information online so that others will join him.

This is a story about the rapid evolution of a technology that has forced the American legal system to play catch up. Cody Wilson, a 24 year old University of Texas Law student, is an advocate for the open source production of firearms using 3D printing technology. This makes him a highly controversial figure on both sides of the gun control issue. MOTHERBOARD sat down with Cody in Austin, Texas to talk about the constitution, the legal system, and to watch him make and test-fire a 3D-printed gun.

I actually watched this by coincidence yesterday. Although I gotta laugh when he calls himself a "Crypto Anarchist" lol. Makerbot's been around for a while and it's not very shocking that this would be the next step. This guy isn't as much an innovator as he just is just another American gun enthusiast who participates in online forums about design. Only difference is he wants to be loud about it and make a name for himself. Not much of an Anarchist if I do say so. I bet in 5-10 years parents will be printing BB guns and such for their preteens to learn on. Then again with all the time and effort involved it's much easier to buy a real gun that doesn't break. Interesting. But really not a revelation.

Call it what you want, he's being a pioneer. His actions are entirely in line with the idea of crypto anarchy, which advocates the unrestrained dissemination of all knowledge, traditionally with an emphasis on subversive knowledge. So really, this is more like the motherfuckin crown jewel of crypto anarchy than anything else. The fact that he's drawing attention is besides the point. Let's not make the guy out to be a megalomaniac when he's just talking about changing paradigms that are greater than any of us.
